Taking the Sacrament

Explain how taking the sacrament helps you renew your baptismal covenant. In a family home evening, teach others about things we can do to remain faithful.

Preparation:

  • Review the Baptismal Covenant in Mosiah 18:10
"Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you?"
  • Read the information on Baptism and Sacrament from the Faith in God for Girls booklet
"When I was baptized I made a covenant to take upon me the name of Jesus Christ and to serve Him and be obedient. Heavenly Father has given me the Holy Ghost. Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, I can be forgiven of my sins when I repent. If I keep my baptismal covenant, I can return to live with Him.
When I take the sacrament, I renew my covenant to take upon me the name of Jesus Christ, to always remember Him, and to obey His commandments. When I do this, I can feel the Holy Ghost guiding me."
  • Review Sacramental Prayers Moroni 4:3 and Moroni 5:2
"O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it; that they may eat in remembrance of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy Son, and always remember him, and keep his commandments which he hath given them, that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen."
"O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee, in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy Son, which was shed for them; that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, that they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen."

Ask a member of the family to give an opening prayer

Ask the question "What covenant do we make at baptism?" Read Mosiah 18:10 and explain that we covenant to take upon the name of Jesus Christ and to serve him and be obedient to his commandments.

Explain that as we take the sacrament, we remember and renew the baptismal covenants to take upon the name of Christ and keep his commandments.

Ask your family how they can remain faithful to these covenants. Prayer, Obedience, CTR, Studying of the scriptures and repentance when we make mistakes help us stay focused in our daily lives.

Play the thimble game with your family

Ask a member of the family to give a closing prayer
